1 in 8: The Torso Project Book
The book, 1 in 8: The Torso Project, documents the healing art experience of the same name for women affected by breast cancer. The book consists of color photos of over 24 embellished plaster cast torsos made in workshops by women with breast cancer and their female friends and family members. Each torso is accompanied by an artist’s statement and photo of the artist.
Also included is explanatory text and photos from workshops and exhibits. Artist and breast cancer activist Matuschka, known for her controversial cover photo on the Sunday New York Times Magazine that exposed her mastectomy scar, provides the book’s foreword.
The book is compiled and introduced by project originator and facilitator, Pam Roberts, a writer, artist and breast cancer survivor who used art and writing to help herself heal from her diagnosis 20 years ago.
The 8.5″ x 11″ soft cover book, 48 pages in length, imparts the courage and creativity of the women who have participated in the transformative experience of torso making workshops and exhibits that make up 1 in 8: The Torso Project.
